Lungs: Meet Fresh Air

Yesterday was the first time I've run outside in about two months. I've spent a depressing two months running on treadmills because it was either too dark, too cold or the sidewalks were covered in snow.

Yesterday it was time to fix that. The temps had crept into the 40s and although the wind was blowing like crazy, I laced up my shoes and headed outside.

Oh and it was a rude awakening for my lungs. Hello, cold, crisp winter air, meet my poor lungs, used to breathing stale, warm, gym air.

Also, outside apparently there are these things called hills. Things I used to be conditioned to run up and down. Not so much anymore.

My first run outside was wonderful in so many ways, but a harsh reality check in so many others. I'm counting down the weeks (only two to go!) until we flip the clocks and get more daylight so I can fit in more outside runs during the week and banish the treadmill from my life.

In good news though, my hip hurt like a million times less running outside then it did running on the treadmill. I still treated it to the foam roller afterward though.

I can't wait to run outside again. The trail I run on is still covered with snow, so I have to wait until it melts. Hopefully that won't be too long!

Welcome back to real running. I could not handle two months on a treadmill. Cheers!

I don't have snow issues here, so I feel for ya, but I ran in 32 degree temps yesterday, and windy! Go me :-)

Great news that outside made your hip hurt much less.

I can't wait to reset my clock too. I'm hoping that will give me the push to get in some evening runs.

Good work outside!!! I ran on the lakefront path this weekend and a bunch of it was ok, but parts were completely snowed over, and I had no choice but to barrel through. It's times like those when I do really wish I had access to a treadmill!

Here's to better weather ahead!!!

I'm SO glad it's been a mild winter here and I've been able to run outside at least once a week between treadmill runs.

That cold air really is a shock to the lungs, hey!?!

I hate that shock and the aftermath of running in the cold. You know, the wheezing and coughing for hours. I hope that is not only me.

I think running outside is a mood lifter for sure.

I'm happy your hip did so well outside, that is kind of strange! Did you know that I am STILL not used to your new blog and I keep thinking it's going to look like the old one when I click on your title! I NEED to get over it, it's been months, right???!!
