Hot pink shoes and a foam roller

by - Monday, February 22, 2010

I spent a lot of time this weekend getting everything in place to start training for the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler.

The most important thing on my list was getting sized for new running shoes. For the past four years, I've been running in Mizuno Wave Inspires and I've had no problems with them. They felt comfortable on my feet, supported and cushioned well and just pretty much rocked.

But the other day on the treadmill, I started wondering if maybe my shoes were tied to my hip problems. I mean after four years it is possible for a running gait to change and I was wondering if maybe I needed a new kind of shoe.

So I headed to my neighborhood running store for the full gait analysis. I walked and jogged up and down the length of the store, while one of the specialists watched me.

Final conclusion:
My stride was still the same.

He brought out three pairs of shoes for me to try on: the update Mizuno Wave Inspires, Brooks Adrenalines and a Saucony shoe.

I tried them all on, ran around in them, but in the end still went back with the Mizuno. It was by far still the most comfortable on my foot.

As an added bonus, the new color is a hot pink. I kind of like it.

Since I had a gift certificate from a race, I decided to splurge on an extra purchase: a foam roller!

So now that I'm armed with new shoes and a torture device for my IT bands I'm ready to hit the ground running (wow sorry for the bad pun) with this training plan.

  1. I run in those exact shoes. They were the most natural feeling shoes (if that makes sense) that I've ever put on. Yippeee for new shoes!

  4. I just got new shoes, EXACT same pair I had before, and I'm having terrible shin splints. I wonder if my gait has changed? Hmmm....

  5. I love that you got pink shoes for the cherry blossom run. You can also save them for breast cancer runs too, I suppose :)

  6. I tend to stick with what I already know. Unless there's a good deal to be had. Cheers to the new gears.

  10. I absolutely love the Adrenalines, but have never tried the Mizuno Waves. However, Runners' World did a comparison of similar shoes and I made this list of ones that were supposed to be like the Adrenalines:
    Adidas Supernova Sequence
    Mizuno Wave Inspire
    New Balance 769
    Nike Structure Triax 12
    Saucony ProGrid Omni 7 Moderate

  11. By kind of like it, I hope you mean LOVE the hot pink...(at least I do!) What running store do you go to? I have had SUCH bad luck with finding my shoes in the DC area. I ended up buying a new pair in Washington state last week.

I have a pair of fully hot pink racers and I swear they make me faster! :)

Also, I finally bought a foam roller a couple months ago and I cannot believe I lived without it for so long!!

  13. IT issues are fairly common, so your solution would have to be out there somewhere! Most likely it is imbalances and form. You are on the right track with the foam roller, and PINK definitely helps :-)
