Spotted in D.C.

Sometimes I see some weird things on my morning commute. I think it must be because I leave my house by 6:25 to get into the office at 7 a.m. and all the wierdos haven't gone to bed yet or something like that.

I also tend to see a bunch of runners out logging their morning miles.

Well this morning I saw the funniest thing ever. I was walking down the street after getting off the metro when I hear singing over my right shoulder. I'm thinking it's just a homeless guy walking down the street singing to himself. Nothing that out of the usual.

I'm sure you can imagine my surprise when I get passed by an older man out for a run (wearing all black...whoo that's not smart in the summertime with the sun..and doing more of a shuffle than a run) and rocking an old bright yellow Walkman (didn't know those things still existed) clipped on the back of his belt.

Yup he was wearing a belt with all cotton and some tube socks. But the most bizarre thing of all was that he was singing to his music. And I'm not talking like under your breath humming like I'll sometimes do. I'm talking belting out his jams. I chuckled to myself a little bit.

Hey whatever makes you happy on a run right?

-----

In other news my laziness and crappy eating streak have continued. I skipped my run this weekend in favor of taking a day trip to the beach. It was a cut back week so only five miles so I didn't feel toooo bad about it. But then I skipped yesterday's three miler too because I was so exhausted. Back on the training wagon tonight with a tempo run. I have a feeling after my laziness and weekend of indulgence it ain't gonna be pretty.

That's hilarious! You shoulda snapped a quick pic of him on your phone.

BTW, DC is supposedly the healthiest city in the US, so you're lucky to live in a place where people are out running first thing int he morning instead of hitting up Dunkin Donuts!

I didn't think anybody used those bulky yellow walkman's any more! I couldn't even imagine using one. I agree with Jess, you should have taken a picture.

As a Nebraska girl, I beg you to go to beach for all of us landlocked folk who can not. :o)

I laugh at some of the people I see running too, but all the time, I feel pride. They are getting it done....

I am so guilty of running and singing at the same time. I just don't give a crap - and some of those songs are just too good to resist!

What was he singing?

Please say gangsta rap!

Get yer @$$ back to work running, sister! It just gets harder every day you don't. (For the record ... I mean running gets harder. That wasn't a double intendre. Because my mind just doesn't work that way.)

That's actually cool about the old guy and his walkman. Good for him!

Some people are so funny when they run! A guy by me always used to run in jeans...I saw him at least one per week, so it's not like running was a casual thing for him.

Maybe your tempo run will rock after all the rest?? Let's look on the bright side!

how awesome! i think you should dress up and go for a run like that to get back on your wagon ;)

taking the day off to go to the beach is completely legit in my book. in fact i would have yelled at you had you turned down the beach to run! :)

Nothing too strange about that.... my running songs include "25 miles to home" by Edwin Star and "Never let me down" by Kanye. And that's a SONY sports walkman - I had that!

HILARIOUS!!! I wish I could have seen this guy!

Glad you found my blog - I'm following yours now, too!

It's great to have a fellow DC runner to blog with! :)

I'm usually too out of breath to sing while I'm jogging, I've heard that's what singers do to work their lungs though!

That's too funny! Reminds me of a lady that I would see at the gym in the morning. She would be dressed in 80's sweatsuits, old cassette player in hand, dancing while working out. No lie. You can't help but watch her. Makes me giggle.
